One significant stumbling block is the fact that the procedure is done blind with the clinician relying almost entirely on tactile sensation and clinical expertise to produce a clean root surface. As such, procuring a deep understanding of root morphology and how it provides hiding places for biofilm and calculus deposits is key to successful outcomes.
