The 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions made significant changes to the periodontal classification system, which has improved diagnostics and treatment. Oral health professionals are responsible for identifying and assisting in the maintenance of patients’ periodontal status. Clinicians should be aware of the changes to the periodontal classification guidelines and be able to apply them in professional practice. Close adherence to the updated guidelines is paramount to legal and ethical practice.
