A Minimally Invasive Approach to Caries
By Susan Vogell, EdD, RDH, and Jean Hall, DHEd, CHES®, RDH
Dental caries is a prevalent, chronic, and infectious oral disease that continues to plague both adults and children. Worldwide, approximately 2.3 billion people have experienced caries in their permanent teeth, and 530 million children are diagnosed with caries in their primary teeth. Caries can affect individuals throughout their lifetimes. In its advanced form, caries can cause pain, nutritional deficiency, and poor growth and development outcomes—leading to missed school and workdays and reduced quality of life.1 Further, untreated caries may lead to life-threatening infections.
