Infection Control Update

In late March, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings: Basic Expectations for Safe Care.¹ The CDC Summary reflects existing evidence-based recommendations, as set forth in the CDC’s Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings—2003,² as well as other guidelines and recommendations published since 2003.^3–7 The CDC Summary emphasizes CDC standard precautions and basic infection prevention expectations for safe dental care. The CDC Summary is not a new guideline; rather, it is a supplement to the 2003 guidelines and is designed to facilitate compliance with the existing recommendations.¹
