Oral Cancer Detection
By Daniel M. Laskin, DDS, MS and Tammy K. Swecker, BSDH, MEd
The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 48,000 people will develop oral and oropharyngeal cancer in 2016 and that over 9,500 will die of this disease.1 Despite the fact that most of these cancers are readily visible, and therefore should be easily detectable and treatable at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate has not changed significantly over the past several decades, remaining at about 50% to 55%.1
