The Importance of Health Literacy

Dental hygienists are on the frontline of prevention. They are often the first oral health professional to review patients’ medical histories, obtain vital signs, complete assessments, and provide dental hygiene diagnoses. As such, dental hygienists need to equip themselves with the skills needed to advance positive oral health outcomes. Supporting patients with low health literacy is key to helping them maintain and/or improve their oral health.
