The Danger Is Real

Tobacco use is a worldwide habit that leads to approximately 5 million deaths annually and generates tremendously high health care costs.1 Cigarette smoking may be the most common method of tobacco use, but another type—waterpipe or hookah smoking—is gaining popularity. A hookah is also referred to as a shisha, narghile, maassel, boory, goza, arghileh, or hubble bubble.2 The use of waterpipes in hookah bars and other social gathering places is a growing trend in the United States, particularly among young people. Dental hygienists—who focus on helping patients achieve optimal health through education and prevention—are well positioned to address the risks associated with hookah use.
