Improve Outcomes with Interprofessional Collaboration

Increased awareness among medical and dental providers regarding the connection between oral health, systemic disease, and overall health and wellness has given rise to an emphasis on interprofessional education and collaboration. Interprofessional teamwork, education, and collaborative practice are becoming key elements of efforts to promote health and treat patients.1 Interprofessional teamwork is defined as cooperation, coordination, and collaboration between health professions in delivering patient-centered care.2 Interprofessional education occurs when students or members of two or more health or social professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.2–5
