Strategies for the Safe Treatment of Cardiovascular Patients
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Individuals are living longer with cardiovascular disease, however, as treatment interventions have become more effective. Current estimates indicate that 82.6 million Americans have cardiovascular disease and, by 2030, this number is estimated to rise to 116 million.1,2 It is likely that dental hygienists will encounter patients with cardiovascular disease. As such, clinicians should have an understanding of disease characteristics and pathophysiology, as well as treatment modifications needed to provide safe and effective care.
