Skip the Sugary Drinks

One of the most important duties of dental hygienists is to educate their patients on how to prevent oral diseases. Patients who are diagnosed with caries may ask how the decay formed. This provides the opportunity for clinicians to investigate patients’ lifestyles, including diet, for the potential causes of caries and to inform patients how they can prevent additional lesions from developing. Patients may be surprised to realize how much sugar they are consuming and how this elevates their caries risk. Oral health professionals are charged with educating patients about the relationship between sugar and caries, especially the consumption of sugars through drinking sweetened beverages.
