Improving Access to Care
In 2000, United States Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, FAAFP, FACPM, FACP, provided a landmark report dedicated to the status of oral health in America. This was the first time oral health was solely highlighted in a surgeon general’s report. While Satcher acknowledged several noteworthy oral health improvements that had been accomplished prior to the year 2000, he emphasized that there were still significant oral health disparities among underserved populations.1
