The Ethics of Off-Label Drug Use


Although medical advances have made it possible for individuals to live longer, advanced age is often influenced by medications used for indications not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Using drugs off-label has become a common practice in dentistry (Table 1),1–8 and this increase in off-label therapy underscores the clinical need for an advanced knowledge of pharmacology, as there can be ethical and legal implications associated with drugs used in this manner.
