5 Things to Consider Before Posting to Social Media

Dental hygienists need to understand the world of social media before hitting post or share on these platforms. Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are launching pads for dental hygienists who are building a brand, applying for influencer programs, or attempting to grow their following. But social media can be unforgiving. Here are 5 things to consider before posting to social media.

1. Can this get me in trouble? Dental hygienists should employ the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s Professional Code of Ethics when deciding whether to post an image or story to social media.  If the photo shows you or your colleagues doing something irresponsible in the office, don’t post it. Oral health professionals must also be familiar with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act to avoid any breach of privacy.

2. Will my boss see this post? Do not bad-mouth your boss or coworkers online. You should not complain about your manager’s bad habits or a team member’s tardiness in a TikTok video or Instagram reel. Don’t tweet a meme directed at your boss or post a video complaining about a patient. You never know who will see your posts. Privacy settings may prevent the post from getting leaked to someone in your office, but it’s better to play it safe and keep those thoughts to yourself. Or voice them to a trusted friend—but keep it off-line.

3. Is this misinformation? Before sharing or liking a post, determine if it is well-sourced and the information is verified. Remember any share or like is a reflection on you. If the information seems sketchy, do not share it on your page as credible information.

4. Should I argue online? The answer to this question is no. Arguing online with commenters is a waste of valuable time and energy. Everyone has opinions but that doesn’t mean your followers need to watch an argument play out on social media.

5Does this violate my office’s social media policy? Many dental practices have established social media policies that explain what is prohibited when posting online. Dental hygienists should ask about the dental office’s social media policy to understand what is acceptable and what is against company policy.
