Dietary Influence on Inflammation

Cultures across the world have many differences, including diet. The Western diet has been criticized in recent years because of the increased incidence of chronic diseases linked to food consumption.1 These inflammatory diseases are further propelled by consuming pro-inflammatory foods.1 Examples of systemic conditions influenced by systemic inflammation include diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.1–3 Additionally, these chronic conditions have been linked to the exacerbation of chronic periodontitis.4 Inflammation is the primary cause of tissue destruction in chronic periodontitis.2
