Stop the Cycle of Missed Appointments

By  Richard James Tanega, RDH, BS, Priyanka Sharma, RDH, BSc, Stefania Willis, RDH, MA, DMH

Approximately 28% of dental patients routinely cancel appointments.1,2 While a quarter of a practice’s patient base may seem inconsequential, these cancelations can negatively impact patient care, as well as practice management. Failure to comply with scheduled dental appointments can jeopardize the continuity of treatment, interfere with the development of patient-provider relationships, and hinder the establishment of a dental home. Late and missed appointments not only impact the schedule of patients, they also hurt the practice’s bottom line. While limited data exist, losses in revenue due to broken appointments may total between $40,000 and $60,000 a year for an average dental practice.1
