Alternative Mandibular Block Techniques

Successful Halsted inferior alveolar nerve blocks (HIANBs) require aligning relevant and sometimes difficult-to-visualize penetration sites and needle pathways with key technique aspects. Even when optimal sites are located, profound anesthesia may not result.¹

Many clinicians have perfected their HIANB technique, however, the risk of failure remains.² When using common techniques, confirmed by contact with the medial ramus near the mandibular foramen, profound anesthesia is not assured.
