Sleep Disorder Detection in Children

By Catherine K. Starnes, RDH, BS, Jeffrey S. Rouse, DDS

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a term that encompasses several sleep breathing disorders such as snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA results in the partial or complete obstruction of the airway by the soft palate and/or base of tongue. It lasts longer than 10 seconds with an associated 4% oxygen desaturation. In the general population, 2% to 3% of children have OSA.1
