Globally, dental caries is the most preventable chronic disease—affecting 97% of the population—and an estimated 2.5 million people have un­treated caries in their permanent teeth regardless of age, race, gender, or sex. Dental caries remains a public health concern for children and older adults, particularly among low-income populations. In the United States, 96% of older adults age 65 and older have untreated decay.1 Topical fluoride solutions, which provide a balance between protective and pathogenic factors, are the gold standard in preventing and/or arresting dental caries.1–6
