Caring for Children With Diabetes

By Dorothy J. Rowe, RDH, MS, PhD and Hyun A. Sohn, RDH, MS

Diabetes mellitus is the third most common chronic disease in children and adolescents.1In the United States, about 208,000 people younger than 20 have been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes; this accounts for 0.25% of all individuals in this age group.1During 2008 to 2009, an estimated 18,436 Americans younger than 20 were newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.1 This is the leading form of diabetes in children of all ages, and it accounts for almost all diabetes in children younger than 10.2 Although type 2 diabetes is less common in children, the incidence is greater among youth ages 10 to 19 than in younger children.1
